Dr. Kela Henry is very informative and relevant to middle and high school girls. Her messages to them are clear and concise on education and health issues girls face and how to overcome them!

Nia & the Numbers Game: A Teenager’s Guide to Education, Relationships & Sex by Kela Henry, MD takes a unique approach by combining fiction and facts to both entertain and educate adolescent readers. The tone of the book is always casual, yet frank and very Judy Blume-esque in its candor.

In this novel geared toward adolescent girls and their families, Dr. Kela Henry offers positive inspiration as she guides girls, especially those from lower-economic families, through the often-daunting processes of maintaining self-esteem, navigating romantic relationships, and applying for college. Nia & the Numbers Game, A Teenager's Guide to Education, Relationships & Sex is a unique combination of fact and fiction. Written with the rich detail of a novel, the story follows Nia's progress from a girl in middle school to a young doctor and then a mother who is married with a baby of her own.

Goodreads

Nia & the Numbers Game should be added to the required reading list for every middle school and high school student. I absolutely loved reading this book. It covers issues that teen aged girls experience with such an intelligent and nurturing tone. After reading the first chapter, I said to myself, “This is brilliant!!!”

You captured the experience of a young black female as she passed through different stages of growth. The information was always appropriate for the age and stage of the protagonist. As a health educator, I see the book as a tool parents can use to understand the issues that teenagers must now navigate. I loved reading it. Thank you so much.

I just finished your book and it is excellent. I couldn’t put it down. I think it should be required reading for all schools.

As a father of a daughter, I think it is extremely important to highlight women like Dr. Kela who are strong advocates for teenage girls especially in today’s climate with the social media and dysfunctional reality show culture.

Nia and the numbers game is a book that walks you through the awkward and tempting situations that most girls face in life today. It tells you all of this, but still puts it into a story line that is incredible. The book not once talked down about the situations, but also didn't sugarcoat it either. It simply guided you through it, and gave you really good advice as in how to work through these things that us girls may face. The topic and storyline she picked was amazing, and I give it all 5 stars.

SydneiAmazon Review

Dr. Henry, a practicing physician specializing in family medicine, and an advocate for teenage girls, takes the “edutainment” approach by giving her readers a very likeable and relatable protagonist in Nia and then combines Nia’s story with a frank “Let’s Talk” discussion at the end of each chapter that addresses the specific issues covered by that particular chapter.
These issues are wide-ranging and cover self-esteem, first crushes, first loves, dating, picking the right colleges and even the cost of tuition, as well as more intimate subjects like puberty, sex and sexually-transmitted diseases. In some cases, there is a true or false quiz to the end of the discussion, followed by detailed answers. Henry doesn’t talk down to her audience, nor does she try and sugarcoat any of the information she provides. The tone of the book is always casual, yet frank and very Judy Blume-esque in its candor.
