(Dr. Kela Henry 2023 recipient of The 2023 Drexel Boots Cooper MD Award) At the time, she noticed a lot of her patients and their parents were coming to her with questions around sex and you could, ‘cut the tension in the room with a knife.’ She realized that there needed to be more conversations with adolescents around this topic -- conversations that she was grateful to have as a teen. - “Thank God I had a very open-minded and forward-thinking father,” says Dr. Kela. “He talked to me, and he was very realistic. Because of that, I understood that sex was a part of life, and that I should have rules, expectations, and boundaries.” (Read Feature)

Black physician launches new TV series to give teen girls of color a voice
Dr. Kela shares, “There are some incredible teenage girls of color out there. Dozens are starting their own businesses, including non-profits, and giving back to their communities in big ways. Most of them have had to overcome serious setbacks or life-altering experiences and they have forged forward, with only their state of mind carrying them through to the next day.” (Read Feature)

Preview of new TV series “Let’s Talk Teens with Dr. Kela”
African American teenage girls are calling out for help and Dr. Kela Henry hears them and is directly and candidly discussing their on-going issues while they and their families deal with unprecedented mental health issues including depression, their lack of enthusiasm for anything, and the debilitating reality for them that life itself may not be worth living. Suicide among teens is the highest it has ever been in our country’s history, with parents sleeping in the rooms of teens to prevent them from taking their own lives while the house is dark, and resting is the intention. Atlanta, GA — After meeting hundreds of African-American, Latina and Asian teenage girls throughout her career, author Dr. Kela Henry was compelled to write a book for teen girls that emphasizes the importance of decisions. Told in narrative form, Nia & The Numbers Game: A Teenager’s Guide to Education, Relationships & Sex (published by BTH Creations LLC) is a new user-friendly guide for adolescent girls that helps them to learn about the changes occurring in their bodies and how to best navigate the circumstances of their teenage years.
